Privacy policy
Last updated: October 15, 2026
This policy explains what Moekura (moekura.net) collects about you, why, who else handles it, how long it's kept, and what you can do about it.
Who is responsible
Moekura is run by Moe Studios ("we", "us"). We decide how your data is used. For anything about your data, write to [email protected].
What we don't do
- No ads, and no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
- No third-party analytics or tracking scripts.
- We don't sell or rent your data, and we don't share it for marketing.
What we collect
Your account. Your user name, email address, password (stored only as a salted hash), settings and preferences (such as your blacklist and theme), and, if you set them up, your two-factor secret, recovery codes, passkeys and API keys.
What you post. Uploads and their source links, tags, ratings, comments, notes, pools, wiki and forum posts, private messages, favourites, votes, reports and flags, with their edit history and the times they were made.
File metadata. Identifying metadata (such as camera details, GPS location and editing software) is removed from JPEG, PNG and WebP uploads before they're stored. GIF, AVIF and video files keep their metadata, so remove it yourself before uploading those if it matters to you.
How you connect.
- When you log in or change something (posting, editing, voting, changing settings), we record the IP address you did it from, with the first and last time it was seen, at most once an hour. Reading pages alone isn't recorded here.
- Each login session keeps the IP address and browser it started from.
Server logs. Our web servers log requests: the time, the address requested, the response, the referring page, the browser's User-Agent and the connecting IP address. We use them to keep the site running, find faults and investigate abuse.
Email. We send you account emails (verification, login codes, password resets and account notices). If you write to us, we keep your message and our reply.
How we use it
- To run your account and show what you post.
- To keep the site secure and fight spam, abuse and ban evasion. This is the main reason we keep IP addresses.
- To moderate content and enforce the terms of service (https://moekura.net/terms) and site rules (https://moekura.net/rules).
- To suggest tags: uploaded images are analysed by an AI tagging model that runs on our own servers. Images aren't sent to any outside AI service for this, and we don't use your uploads to train models.
- To answer you when you contact us, and to meet our legal obligations.
If you're in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, our legal bases are: providing the service you asked for (your account and posts); our legitimate interests in keeping the site secure, preventing abuse and moderating it (IP addresses, logs, moderation records); and legal obligations where they apply.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the site needs to work: one to keep you logged in, one to protect forms against forgery, and short-lived ones to show messages and remember notices you dismissed. Cloudflare, which protects the site, may set its own strictly necessary security cookies, for example after a security check. None of these are used for advertising or tracking.
Who can see your data
- Everyone: your profile and user name, and what you post publicly: uploads, tags, comments, notes, wiki and forum posts, favourites, and edit history. Anyone can read these, including through the API, without an account.
- Private messages are visible to you and the people you write to. Staff read them only when one is reported to them, or when needed to investigate abuse or meet a legal obligation.
- Staff can see account email addresses, recorded IP addresses and sessions to moderate the site.
- Authorities: we disclose data when the law requires it, or when it's needed to protect someone's safety or the site.
Where your data is stored
Your data is stored and processed in the United States. If you use Moekura from elsewhere, your data is transferred to the US, where data protection law may differ from yours.
How long we keep it
- Account data and posts: while your account exists, until you or the staff delete them.
- IP addresses used by your account: 365 days after they were last seen.
- Login sessions: until you log out or the session ends: after 30 days unused, or at most 365 days after login.
- Server logs: up to 30 days.
- Deleted posts stay hidden on the site until staff purge them. Once purged, the files are removed from storage within a few days.
- Database backups: up to about 40 days, so deleted data can remain in backups for that long before it's gone for good.
- Moderation records (bans, removals and the reasons for them) may be kept longer when needed to protect the site from repeat abuse.
Security
Passwords are stored as salted hashes, all connections use HTTPS, and access to the servers and database is limited to the staff who run them. No system is perfectly secure, so use a unique password and turn on two-factor authentication or a passkey.
Your rights and choices
- You can change your email address, password, settings and two-factor options from your account at any time.
- You can edit or delete much of what you've posted.
- You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete your account and its data. Write to [email protected] from the email address on your account so we can confirm it's you. We'll answer within 30 days.
- Deleting your account deletes its recorded IP addresses and sessions. Public contributions that others rely on (such as tag and wiki edits) may stay on the site, and moderation records may be kept as described above.
- Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your data, and to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Moekura is for adults only. It isn't meant for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a minor has an account, tell us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The current version is always on this page, with the date it was last updated. If a change is significant, we'll announce it on the site.
